UNC Charlotte
Prospective Members
Interested in research? Start here!
The LaBella lab conducts a mix of computational and experimental research that is accessible to many different levels of expertise.
There are several principles that guide our research.
-
We aim to conduct ethical, collaborative, positive, and inclusive research that we can stand behind.
-
We aim to compensate all lab members with course credit or with a salary/stipend. This depends on lab funding and the position type.
-
We communicate respectfully and clearly with each other and the broader community.
Are there open positions? The short answer is in the table below. There are also additional details on how to contact Dr. LaBella if you are interested in research.
Position | Opening? | Information |

Essential Info
If you are interested in any of the open positions in the LaBella lab, please send Dr. LaBella an email.
Please include in your email
- An updated CV
- A brief (200 words or less) description of your previous experience (courses or research) and a statement about why you are interested in working in the lab.
Generic emails that do not seem relevant to the research directions of the lab may not receive a response.
Contacting Dr. LaBella about research interests
Teaching assistantships are not determined by individual faculty in the Bioinformatics and Genomics Program. You will not receive a reply from me if you inquire about TAships.
Graduate (Master's and PhD) TA-ships - not available
Detailed Position Information
Our federally funded postdoctoral scholar position is currently filled.
Additional future postdocs may be considered if they receive external funding. This would require preparing an application prior to arrival. Email Dr. LaBella with your CV and a brief (500 words or less) research statement outlining your previous work and research goals for a postdoctoral position.
Postdoctoral Scholars
All students must apply to our Bioinformatics and Computational Biology PhD Program. However, there are two mechanisms by which PhD students are admitted:
- Directly into a lab with external grant funding
- As a rotation student uncommitted to a specific lab
Direct Admission
We are currently not accepting direct admission into our lab.
Rotation Student
Once admitted to the PhD Program, students coordinate with faculty to identify two labs for rotations. We are currently accepting rotation students in the lab.
Applying to the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology PhD program.
All students (rotation and direct admission) apply to the program and are reviewed by the admissions committee.
Details about the program can be found here: https://cci.charlotte.edu/academics/bioinformatics/bcb-phd-program/
Additional information for applying to the program
- Review the PhD handbook to understand how our program works: https://cci.charlotte.edu/2023/08/30/bioinformatics/
- Thoroughly respond to each question posed in the application.
- Contact potential advisors whom you discussed in your application (see below on tips for emailing faculty).
- Review relevant visa information. The research environment in the US is rapidly changing and it may be difficult to secure a visa to study.
PhD Students
The Master's in Bioinformatics is an exciting program in the department. The students, however, do not complete a thesis.
Details on the Master's program can be found here: https://cci.charlotte.edu/academics/bioinformatics/bioinformatics-ms-program/
There are several ways to participate in research as a Master's student:
Internship Students - Currently accepting
Master's students are required to complete an internship during their program. These are primarily conducted over the summer on a volunteer basis. If you are interested in completing your internship in the LaBella Lab contact Dr. LaBella
Research Assistants - Potential openings
These are paid positions in which students commit a specific number of hours to conducting research in the LaBella Lab. We require that you volunteer in the lab for 2-3 months prior to being considered for a Research Assistantship.
There is also departmental funding in the form of the MACRIB fellowship. If you are interested in applying for this fellowship, you should reach out to Dr. LaBella the semester before you would like to work in the lab.
Research Volunteers - Potential openings
These unpaid positions are offered as a trial for students interested in making a more substantial research contribution. After the volunteer position, you will be considered for a Research Assistant position if funding is available.
Master's Students
There are many different ways to participate in research as an undergraduate student.
If you are interested in Undergraduate Research for the Spring of 2026 see this page -> click here
UR2PhD Student - Currently accepting.
This is an intensive research position in which you will work with a graduate mentor. Participants will either receive course credit or compensation for their research time.
This program is ideally suited for students aiming to apply to a graduate school program.
You must participate in an undergraduate research training course.
More details here: https://cra.org/ur2phd/for-undergraduate-students/
Independent Study or Capstone Course Student - Potential openings
If you are interested in working with Dr. LaBella on an independent study or capstone course, please reach out.
Details on the courses offered can be found here: https://cci.charlotte.edu/independent-study-approval/
OUR Research Scholars - No openings
Sometimes, we will offer research experiences through the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR).
